I bought my Infiniti a year and nearly 24,000 miles ago. Never thought I’d need to put it to rest now. Just shy of 275k on the clock. Why? Catastrophic bearing failure, front driver’s side. Basically, with little to no warning, the wheel bearing, axle, boot, abs sensor, spindle, and hub assembly all went. At the same time I was going to need to replace the tires and rear struts. And the brake pads. And the rotors.

It can all be fixed, but everything on this car is going at once, and believe me, I just don’t have the patience to fix it all just to have more go wrong in a month. To even get it anywhere to be worked on, it has to be towed. I’ve got Durangos that also need some work. It may be time to just put the car out to pasture, and part it out potentially. Time to look for something else!

I had a rear wheel hub catastrophically fail on my 2002 impreza, it was about $400 for all the repairs that were needed plus a tow to the mechanic. I was not a happy camper considering that at the time the car was at 85k.

That’s pretty awful. We were quoted around $1,000 by a mechanic for just the stuff that is clearly needing fixed, could be more. I paid $800 for the car and I have maybe that much more in it with repairs and replacements. The biggest repair we’ve had to do up to this point was an alternator, but that wasn’t awful. You’re quite aware, with a chewed up axle and bearing, it’s quite dangerous to drive on if you even can.

I thought that the rear diff had exploded when it happened. The rear of the car started to stear on it’s own and the noise sounded like someone was rattling a box of rocks under the car. It was quite disconcerting and I was quite pissed. Condiering that the wheel could have completely fallen off of the car I think we were lucky on the safety side.

Definitely. I’ve had a wheel fall off a car while driving, downhill, at 40mph. Not an experience to repeat. No long term damage from that one thankfully. Lugs just came loose from the rim, so I had to shell out $50 for a rim and I ended up with a dented fender but that wasn’t so bad just a little frightening.
